Best of 2013: Valerie June

One of my favorite albums of 2013 was Valerie June's "Pushin' Against A Stone" (now on sale at Amazon for $5). The Tennessee native runs the gamut of American roots music, from Old Country, Bluegrass, Gospel, Blues to Folk, and beyond. She has a unique voice that sounds at once childlike and wise, and that, I'll admit, took a minute to grab me. But once it did, I was hooked. My favorite songs are the dark and haunting "Shotgun," the uplifting "Tennessee Time," and the sweet and soulful "The Hour," but there's not a bad one among the bunch. She's even more affecting in person and I look forward to catching her tour when she hits San Francisco in March 2014.

The Stella Sisters Strike Again

Here's another lovely tune from "Nashville" favorites Lennon and Maisy Stella: "A Life That's Good." The version for purchase has a full band, but otherwise sounds the same. The more upbeat "Share With You," also from the current season, is great too. These sisters have definitely made their mark.
